Whether your trike is a unique home crafted design or is one of the finest pieces of automotive engineering on the road, we know it’s your absolute pride and joy. After all trikes, or tricycles, offer a unique riding experience unlike anything a regular bicycle or motorcycle could provide. You don’t ride it because you want to fade into the background, you probably like the attention it gets wherever you go – the awed stares from passing motorists, kids and other bike and trike fans. Functioning on three wheels, trikes come in all shapes and sizes, and depending on their configuration, can be classed as either motorcycles or cars. However, because they are unique forms of motor transport, they sometimes need to be covered by specialist trike insurance and that’s where The Bike Insurer’s unique partnership with Howden Insurance comes into play!
What is trike insurance?
Trike insurance is essentially a type of insurance that’s specifically designed for three-wheeled vehicles, commonly known as trikes. Trike policies typically offer coverage like car or motorcycle insurance, but since trikes are considered unique vehicles, you might need a specialised policy tailored to the specific needs and risks of your pride and joy. These policies also consider factors such as what the vehicle is classed as (is the trike classed as a motorbike or car) its engine size, the make and model, its usage, and the rider's driving history.
Do I need to insure my trike?
Yes. If you’re going to operate your trike on the public road network in the UK, it’s a legal requirement to have valid insurance in place. Not only is it a legal requirement, but having a policy is also invaluable when it comes to helping protect you and third parties if an accident occurs or something unfortunate happens whilst you’re driving. Due to these reasons, it’s common sense for any trike owner that they get insurance sorted right away so they can avoid any complications that come with not having adequate cover in place.
Types of insurance for trikes
The type of insurance you’ll need will depend on the type of trike you have. Some trikes are actually classed as cars, and others are classed as motorbikes. Either way, if the trike is a standard production model, you might only need a regular car or motorcycle insurance policy to provide cover. But, if your trike has modifications or is non-standard in anyway, you might need a more specialist type of policy, which The Bike Insurer can help you with.
Besides all that, much like many standard motor and vehicle insurance policies, all trike owners are able to opt for one of three levels of cover when taking out a policy:
- Third Party Only
- Third Party, Fire and Theft
- Comprehensive
You’re legally required to have at least Third Party Only cover, as the minimum level of protection you can buy, whilst Comprehensive cover is the highest level of cover you can opt for.
Types of trikes
Maybe you ride an off-the-shelf Harley or Honda bought from a specialist, or perhaps a trike you’ve painstakingly built yourself onto the chassis of an old Reliant. Whatever your model, we know finding reasonable trike insurance can be a bit of a pain.
However, here at The Bike Insurer, we strive to help provide you with insurance quotations for a wide range of different trike types, no matter the style, make, or model and so we’ve partnered with insurance specialists Howden to bring their expertise to your trike insurance requirements:
Here’s the different types of trikes they can cover:
Conventional or Delta: one wheel at the front, two at the back. Can be assembled from scratch using automobile and motorcycle components or converted by modifying a conventional or custom motorcycle into a vehicle with two rear wheels.
Reverse or Tadpole: Two wheels in front and one at the back. Examples of these include the Can-Am Ryker and Spyder.
Auto-Rickshaws: Commonly referred to as a ‘Tuk Tuk’. Usually characterized by a small cabin at the front for the driver operating handlebars, and a cargo or passenger space at the rear.
Howden can also cover trikes adapted for disability, car derived and Q plate trikes.
How to get an insurance quote for your trike
We’re all about consumers getting the right insurance at the right price. To ensure that Howden can provide you with the best possible solution they can, they’ll need the following information:
- Information about your trike – its make and model, how old it is, how much its worth, its engine size.
- Details about yourself – your name, address, riding history and licence type.
- Whether your trike has had any modifications
- How secure is your trike? – does it have any safety features or alarms installed?
- Where it’s parked overnight – will it be left on a drive, in a garage, or on the road?
Once Howden have all the information needed, they can start right away with helping you find a policy that makes sense for you both in terms of budget and providing adequate protection. So, what are you waiting for?
